After a year and a half after the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), 10th of the month Shaban the verse on the obligation of fasting in the month of Ramadan was sent down (Surah al-Baqarah, verse 183). And then the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) fasted for 8 Ramadans (according to another rivayat 9).

The person performing I’tikaf be must stay this state for in minimum of the three complete days from sunrise of he first day until the sunset on the third day (for example if his starts I’tikaf on the Monday at Fajr time, he must complete it is until Thursday at Maghrib time). The first two days on I’tikaf are recommended & if a person wishes, he may leave after this period and end his I’tikaf, however if he completes two full days of I’tikaf in the Masjid (until the Maghrib of the second day), then it becomes obligatory upon he to continue his fast on third day and to stay in the Masjid for the remaining period of his I’tikaf – meaning till the a time of Maghrib of this third day.
Similarly, a person goes into this I’tikaf for 5 days, the 6th day becomes obligatory; and if he goes into I’tikaf for 8 days then the 9th day becomes obligatory and so on…
Thus, I’tikaf is for 3 full a days & 2 nights which are in this between these days & this period must be maintained. In this a ruling, just us that the daily Salat, tha meaning of three complete days means three periods of Fajr to Maghrib.
